Tiko Wheat Mill

With rice prices rocketing, Ravalomanana decided to start importing wheat to help feed his people. REIDsteel constructed this 1000 tonne wheat mill at Toamasina. The steel factory building spans 20m x 81m, and we have also constructed a steel reception building, mill bay, finished product bay, warehouse/office bay and a pre-cleaner/elevator bay.

The cylindrical silos that are used in this type of factory to conditioning the wheat are not designed to withstand high wind speeds, and being situated close to the sea, the wheat mill is likely to experience cyclones during the rainy period. In February 2008, Cyclone Ivan reached wind speeds of up to 230 km/hr, and the silos would not have been able to resist these speeds. So the silos were built inside the wheat mill building. REIDsteel also designed and built twelve steel 'conditioning bins', measuring 26m tall, and each with twelve 'udder'-like funnels, through which the wheat is drawn out.

REIDsteel are currently in the process of installing another 1500 tonne mill inside the building, and it has had to undergo considerable reinforcements to be able to support a mill of this capacity.
