REIDsteel play an active role in trying to reduce global warming and the use of non-renewable energy sources. Powerday is just one of the many recycling specialists that we provide buildings for. REIDsteel were recently involved in the construction of a new state of the art Materials Recycling Facility at Old Oak Sidings in North-West London. It certainly is a design for the future. The site is powered by a biomass energy system, and Powerday make use of both the canal that runs alongside the site and the rail network to transport material to and from the recycling centre. By using these forms of transport rather than Lorries, the carbon footprint of Powerday is greatly reduced. Every year, the Willesden Powerday recycles 1.6 million tonnes of waste, making it the biggest recycling facility of its kind in the UK.
The development comprises of 4 John Reid & Sons' structural steel buildings, including 2 large warehouses, extending over 2000m2 and 7200m2, together with a 450m2 office building and aggregate storage bays spanning 600m2. The newest addition to the Powerday site is the erection of a steel portal framed fitter's workshop, measuring 14m x 30m, and built onto the existing warehouse.
All of the REIDsteel buildings have been designed to the highest specifications and environmental standards. The buildings are steel frame portals supported on piled foundations. A surface water drainage system has been installed to limit the outfall into the Grand Union Canal, for which Reidsteel have supplied the guttering and downpipes. The collected water is put to good use by being sprinkled over the site to prevent the build up of dust.
